RIGA, Feb 5 (LETA) – The parliamentary group of the New Conservative Party (JKP) has nominated Edgars Zelderis, a lawyer and former chairman of the Talsi regional council, for the post of ombudsman.
JKP board member Krisjanis Feldmanis told LETA that Zelderis is a good candidate for the position. “We have common values, particularly regarding socially unprotected people,” the lawmaker said.
Feldmanis also indicated that Zelderis has demonstrated his activity in dealing with these issues both as a lawyer and regional mayor.
At the same time, Feldmanis said that JKP will not be able to endorse current Ombudsman Juris Jansons’ reappointment for another term as JKP considers Jansons to be a “man of the system” who was once nominated for post by “oligarchs’ representatives” from the Union of Greens and Farmers and Harmony.
“Our job is to nominate a politically neutral candidate,” Feldmanis said, stressing that Zelders has resigned from the board of his regional Talsi party.
